From: CSR02

Following on from a promising first release, Centre Source Records offer four cuts of emotive, deeper-leaning house music with CSR02. Seeming to have a focus on exposing fresh Australian talent, the new Brisbane-based, vinyl only label presents the debut release from an elusive duo Ben Milgate and Teagan Barr, who come together as ‘From’.

Opening track ‘The Promise’ is a 909-riddled voyage, moving through raw grooves and melancholic, filtered synth work. It’s dark, and sets the tone for the analogue-filled journey to come. Swirling, cosmic chords and a strong bassline drive ‘The Offering’, and steadily pick up the tempo into moody club music territory.

Flipping over, the dubbed out ‘Zora On’ grabs your attention with soothing chords, before the four-to-the-floor beat kicks in. It maintains the energy with its probing melody that whips against rolling pads and restrained vocals. ‘Undertone’ is a clear standout, and closes the EP beautifully. Nostalgic and effervescent, it blends clean keys and pretty, twinkling percussion, making it perfect for any time of day or night.

From have succeeded in creating a selection of solid dance-floor staples for their debut EP. CSR02 offers a diverse range of tracks, which is entrenched in the realms of house, tech house and dub techno, and bringing with it a distinct Berlin flavour. Despite the production having a predominantly analog feel, the EP is wrapped up in a fresh and contemporary overcoat. Both From and Centre Source Records are definitely ones to watch as Australia continues to reaffirm its place on the map as a burgeoning centre for electronic music.
