Melbourne Music Week has announced it’s full program for 2017, so we’ve selected five faves to help you through the week.
6AM Staff picks
DJ Hell + Honeysmack @ St Paul’s Cathedral
Helmut Geier – aka DJ Hell – is a powerhouse of a DJ, label owner (International Deejay Gigolo), record producer and remixer (Pet Shop Boys, Grace Jones, P. Diddy, Fischerspooner), fashion victim, art freak, electroclash herald and underground techno apostle. The former Munich machine, now Berlin resident has seen and done it all. A typical Hell set can contain music from Bryan Ferry, Bobby Konders and Aphex Twin as well as new wave, punk, disco and techno. There is no old or new school, only the true school.
DJ Hell is supported by a slew of local electronic legends. You’re not going to want to miss this one.
A Colourful Storm Showcase @ Lounge
Melbourne-based record label A Colourful Storm hosts its inaugural MMW Live Music Safari party. Celebrating the darker strains of electronic music, an assembly of Australia’s most engaging up-and-coming live performers are set to play exclusive sets in between extended sessions from our city’s most trustworthy DJs and selectors. Expect surprises as label affiliates, old friends and new faces transform Lounge into a colourful storm.
Ariel Pink @ The Melbourne Recital Centre
Los Angeles’ prodigal song-writing son Ariel Pink brings his 11th studio album to Melbourne Recital Centre as part of Melbourne Music Week 2017.
In true Ariel Pink style, his latest record, Dedicated To Bobby Jameson, features experimental, impressionistic, lo-fi chillwave vibes mixed with themes of mismanaged dreams, West Coast mythologies, haunted boulevards and the acceptance of self.
Miscellanea with HTRK + Underground Lovers
For 100 plus years Town Hall’s many rooms have played host to some of the country’s most memorable music moments (from Paul McCartney’s impromptu piano performance in the Melbourne Room to INXS in the Main Hall). So, in a tribute to its music legacy, we’ve teamed up with some of the city’s most exciting labels, promoters and musicians for a huge all-Victorian showcase that once again reimagines its many and varied spaces for live music. Expect DJ sets in Council Chambers, dance parties on the Portico Balcony and Grand Organ performances in the Main Hall.
The Hotrod & the Burnouts + Nina Buchanan @ Hugs&Kisses
